The processing time for the renewal of a Permanent Resident (PR) Card is 137 days or approximately 4 months and 2 weeks. So if you are a Permanent Resident of Canada and planning to have a vacation outside Canada, make sure to apply for the renewal of your PR Card at least 8 months before it will expire. You need a valid PR Card to return to Canada by plane, train, bus or boat. Without your valid PR Card, you may not be able to board.

NOTE: To keep your Permanent Resident status, you must have been in Canada for at least 730 days during the last five years.
